Dunsmuir (Oakland)
Overcast and mild is how the day started. The sun finally broke around 11:00 but thankfully the temperature never
really got too hot. Pleasant is the only way to describe it, and so goes the day.
The C class was loaded with talent and for the first time ever, I was happy to see that the competition would be stiff
but atleast it was fairly matched. No freaks coming out of the wood work to sand bag the events. Finally a fair
match-up in the C class which seems to be the one thing that everyone has been asking for from the begining. But hey,
that's how the rules are written and the only way to distance yourself from the ringers is to work your way to Pro and that's
what we're trying to do, right?
Enough of that (sure it's my soapbox but you're not here for that, are you?). As I stated before, the C's
were filled with talent and the honor was all mine just to be in the company of such sportsmen-like. . . um, sportsmen.
The attitudes of the athletes were top-notch and the individual abilities were fairly matched. There seemed
to be a good number of experienced athletes as well as a few fairly well trained newbies. All in all there was a really
fair balance among the athletes which made for a really good day had by all in attendance. The athletes loved the close
competition and the spectators loved the show.
The usual suspects were all in attendance: Paul Troppy, Sean Waklee, Roger Jones, Ron Bradley, Jon Tomada, David Farmer
and myself to name a few. Ofcourse there were other very good athletes but the above list is simply a collection of
the athletes that seem to attend all the the same games together.
The competition went as most suspected, each athlete with their individual strong event. Paul walked away with
the stones, Sean with WOB, Ron with hammer and myself with heavy WFD. Otherwise the athlete's performances were fairly
closely matched in the run for event placing. At the end though there could only be one. . . and that one would be Paul
Tropey. Solid top four finishings throughout with an awesome display in stones earned him the top seat at the Dunsmuir
games.
Great job Paul. . . keep up the good work!

Reno Celtic Festival
Games in Reno??? YES! And right downtown, too.
The games and festival were held right downtown in Reno, NV in the park adjacent to the river.
Who'd have thought it could be done? I sure didn't. The days and weeks leading up to this event I kept wondering
where they planned on putting us for the games. I'm not exactly a regular tourist but I'd been there a few times and
there was no way I'd have guessed that the events would be held at the small park along the river. But to my suprise
they not only located us on the river but the setting made for one of the coolest venues I have ever had the pleasure of attending.
Although the temperature was a bit hot, the shade trees made for a very comfortable setting.
There was ample seating for the spectators and the small field allowed for more intimate interaction with crowd. All
things considered, I think this was the best trip I've made all season.
As far as the athletes are considered, the A's and B's were sparsely represented but the athletes
that were in attendance were some of the best in class. The C's definatley dominated the events with a far larger group
of competitors than the A's and B's combinded and so the C's were given their 15 minutes of fame that otherwise would have
been denied them in any other venue. But we won't complain will we guys? Hell no. The time was ours, the
setting was spectacular and at the end of the day. . . the beer was still cold!
Now that's the kind of game worth driving 6 hours for! See ya' next year Reno!
